For the first project of the year, we were asked to get into pairs and produce a set of images with shows a clear connective narrative. We did this by firstly planning a theme then producing two images, another group also did this and we conversed. We then carried on there theme with another two images, also connecting to our narrative.
Using our surroundings, I thought the most interesting location in terms of lighting and narrative relativeness would be to use the lift.
Our idea for the story would be that a girl enters the lift in good spirits, she then becomes overcome with fear upon realising the lift has stopped and there is no possible way out. The fear turns into panic and desperation resulting in her trying to prise the door open, symbolic to superhero stories. The story ends on a cliffhanger, making the viewer respond curiously. Throughout the images, I want to show as many different emotions as possible, this is why we used the use of a mirror image which was blurred and unclear.
Our first image is the equilibrium. This is a wide shot showing the surroundings as a isolated location. This sets the theme for the following images and makes the viewer feel normal.
The second image shows a rather different atmosphere. The lighting and surrounding colours have changed from light and spacial to dark and claustrophobic. The mirror image at each side of the girl connotes her thoughts and worst fears about what the outcome may be of the broken lift. The mirror images are also blurred, symbolising confusion and frustration. This image is my personal favourite as I think it is the most diverse in style and is the main plot of the narrative.
The third image shows another side of her emotions. The lighting is slightly more light and optimistic, however the general feel of the photograph is sadness. I used the primary source of the lighting to show her optimism in certain sections while still keeping the general feel of confusion. The lighting in this image is also more harsh, showing panic and creating a tense atmosphere.
The last image shows the final emotion, anger. This is shown by the girls body language and harsh flash lighting. This posture may be symbolic of super-heros particularly Hulk. This is due to the position of the girl. Her face is not shown as the face may be showing a different emotion to her body language, of desperation, and I wanted to make the viewer decide what she is feeling. Also, what hidden messages her face is showing. I am happy with my set of images as I think they clearly show the emotions and narrative I was trying to communicate to my audience.
